Royal St George's Revisited: March 2014
As some will know, The Merchy Mug was "born" at Royal St Georges in November 2011 as a kind gesture from the "Wigan Lawyer" Mr Coupe, to give Rory a treat at a special golf course to what was considered his last chance of a full round of golf. As it transpired, we were fortunate enough for Rory to be able to take part in 2 more Merchy Mug events at Denham GC & Chiltern Forest GC; furthermore, joining us for festivities at Royal Epping GC.
With the Merchy Mug now an annual fund raising event to raise further money for MNDA in memory of Rory, a reunion of those involved on the inaugural Merchy Mug day in 2011 was proposed, with the majority of the original players joining us with Irene & friends.
The day was made all the more enlightening by Irene joining us as a golfer - who's hand/eye co-ordination was complimented by Richard "Kipper" Hughes with the suggestion she would make a formidable midget boxer!!
The day comprised of three teams battling out for a some rather nice Rioja, and individual prizes of 2 tickets to the 2014 FA Cup Final for the winning male and The Spanish Scouser Trophy for the winning female.
Due to timings we commenced with a very nice 3 course lunch in the club house, Rory Junior not realising the 6 desserts were not just for us but all the other 60 players on the course that day!! Chris "tubby" Lee took a rather nice liking to the Stilton & Cambazola cheeses, leaving some of the mouldy crusts for others to fight over!! Pete "Herbie" Meyers clearly paid for trying to eat the equivalent of his own body weight with a rather low score on the golf course in the afternoon!!
First out with only 3 in the team were Rory "Favourite Nephew" Jnr, Des "The German" Potter & Colin "Ginge" Langley. Despite handicapping their team score they still managed to come last out of 3, no doubt helped by Ginge contributing 40% of all the lost balls on the day!
Second out were Herbie, The Wigan Lawyer, and their 2 vertically challenged team mates Jem "wheres my stool" Ritchie & Doug "I am standing up" Barrett.
In the final group joining Irene were, Kipper, Steve "Nice Tits" Walker & Tubbs, ably joined by 3 professional caddies & Louise Walker caddying for Tubbs!
The team event was won by a single point by the second Group, with the final group coming second, kicking themselves for all 4 failing to score on the stroke index 18, the easiest hole on the course!
The individual prizes were tightly contested with Merchy Mug organisers abstaining from prizes, leaving our winner Doug Barrett winning on count-back from Steve Walker with 34 points! The Spanish Scouser Trophy was supposed to be a one horse race, but some clearly played their best female version of golf, but to no avail!! Irene did herself proud, amassing 21 points on the back 9 resulting in a total of 31 points, leaving 5 of male competitors in her wake!!
Predictions were made to raise a little money on the number of lost balls and number of pars achieved across all 11 players - Rory Junior was closest to the lost ball count of 10 & Louise Walker was closest to the number of pars or better of 50. With a couple of fines we managed to raise £240 for MNDA, which roughly makes £18,500 in total to date from Merchy Mug events in two and a half years.
Needless to say a good day was had by all including the 3 caddies who all looked after Irene tremendously well and one caddy even managing to talk more than Mrs Walker did!
Many thanks again to David Coupe and Chris Lee for arranging another fine day of food, drink and banter - oh and golf!!
