ROYAL ST. GEORGE INQUEST
Merchy's iPad speech in club house which made members head turn as they were looking through the rules of the club to see if there was any mention of iPads as opposed to use of mobile phones !
"Firstly - David - well done for both your extremely kind gesture and generosity in organising the two days for us If this was to be my final round of golf, due to health reasons, then Royal Saint George is certainly not a bad place to play some good golf - or as Ginge Langley said - this was not a good place to play some bad golf!
I think a round of applause in appreciation is warranted for David and Elaine, his PA, who arranged most of the day for us.
Shortly, or in Chris Lee's situation, portly- Chris will present some well- earned prizes for today's efforts.
Personally, I thought the course played well, certainly it played a lot better than I did I made the early decision that as the green keeper staff had made the fairways look so wonderful , it was a shame to play shots on them and ruin them.
David Coupe, one of the best city insurance lawyers there is, or so he told me earlier - I think he meant the city of Wigan - was the inspiration for today and Chris has arranged the introduction of the Merchy Mug trophy for the winner.
Before the prize giving , a couple of observations on the day.
Unfortunately we have lost one of the nine players out there - Boxy must be still out there in the long grass or digging his way back to Australia with his rescue club !
Des has a new addition to his set of clubs - a 3 iron rake and he put it to good use again today!
My golf was average - I would not have thought it was possible to hit a ball behind a tree on a links course but I managed it somehow.
Tony didn't know if it was the sea mist or the 11 pints of Doombar he swallowed last night that affected his game - it may have been the half pint of port he had after the Doombar !
The other dwarf, Doug Barrett, thought the mist was low cloud and it did not affect his vision He could see the long grass above him with ease!
Herbie Meyers was his usual self It is a wonder he gets invited anywhere !
After the prizes, we do have a small fines committee result and therefore I do hope that you have plenty of cash left after last night’s warm up event , which will go towards a good cause
Many thanks again to all for turning up - not too much of a hardship I know but you have certainly made it a memorable couple of days golf, banter and of course a little drinking involved
Over to my fat mate Tubbs for the prize giving"
