Welcome The Merchy Mug website
Where you can keep up-to-date with all things Merchy, enjoy!
Rory lost his battle with MND on Friday, 11 October 2013 with his wife, Irene, by his side. One of his greatest wishes was that The Merchy Mug should be a regular event after his passing and so continue to raise funds for the MNDA. Although Rory won't be with us in body, his sense of fun and humour will be forever.
Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day.
Unseen, unheard, but always near; still loved, still missed and very dear.

The Merchy Mug - History

Following my diagnosis of Progressive Bulbar Palsy back in March 2011 and subsequent forced
early retirement from work, David Coupe - the Wigan Lawyer - very kindly offered to organise and
generously fund a day's golf and dinner for nine people of my choice to play golf at Royal St George,
Sandwich, Kent in November 2011.
Selecting seven others besides me and David was not too difficult a decision! David along with
Chris ' Tubby' Lee organised a trophy to play for to mark the event - The Merchy Mug!

The first event was such a success, with everyone contributing to the fun, that it was decided to host a
second event in 2012 and so on.
Numbers have increased from 9 at Royal St George's to 88 players at Selsdon Park, with a further 20 joining us for dinner.
The added bonus of each day is that we have now raised over £103,000 for the charity, MNDA, to be used towards the research for a cure for Motor Neurone Disease.
Sincere thanks to David for this initiative which has provided immense enjoyment for all concerned
and valuable donations for the MNDA.
The next event is scheduled for 7 October 2016 - more details in the ' future events' tab above.
